Finding My Niche in life

Postby Roanne Sylvester on Sat May 30, 2009 10:09 pm

Growing up in a regular country home, my family and I had never heard of a term like keratoconus. All my mother knew is that I couldn't see to thread a needle, so something had to be wrong. I was none the wiser......... Like most people who have keratoconus, we think our way of seeing is NORMAL!
My mom took me to see an ophthalmologist at age five. He told my mother I was just LAZY!!!!!!
At age eleven, my mother took me to see an optometrist who prescribed glasses. I hated them!!! I was always losing them.
Over the years and three pairs of specs later, I decided to try contact lenses. The optometrist tried RGP lenses with me. Suffice to say he couldn't quite get the right fit, and I tried but gave up in the end because they were always falling out, not to mention that they felt like I had a truck load of gravel in my eyes!
In 2001, I started working in an optical company where I had the great opportunity of meeting Lynn Parry. She immediately diagnosed my condition and started me off on Kerasoft lenses. I couldn't believe how much I wasn't really seeing.............how much of everything I was missing out!
Eight years later, I still wear kerasoft lenses and I also try to help people like me in any way I can. I have learn't that sometimes one has to work a little harder than others, but if you really want to, you can do anything!!!!!!!!!!
